The University of Porto Alegre in Brazil, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), hosted the sixth instalment of the international academic conference series ‘German abroad’ this year. At this conference, dialectologists who research German dialects spoken outside Germany from a linguistic, educational, or other perspective presented their latest research findings.

Dorothee Lehr-Balló and Éva Márkus represented ELTE TÓK with a presentation entitled Deutschsprachiger Unterricht in Ungarn in ungarndeutschen Minderheiteninstitutionen. Wie könnten regionale Varietäten miteinbezogen werden? The topic of the presentation was German dialects in Hungary and how these language variants could be incorporated into German ethnic education in a way that makes language learning enjoyable for children and allows them to experience multilingualism in a playful way.

The three-day conference ended with an excursion during which the conference participants visited German settlements founded in the 19th century in the vicinity of Porto Alegre.
